EU member states have agreed a ban on the use of cadmium in cordless power tools and mercury in button cell batteries. Cadmium will no longer be allowed in cordless power tools after 31 December 2016. Meanwhile, the mercury ban will become law 21 months after the entry into force of the Directive, around mid-2015. Batteries placed on the market prior to the bans will be allowed to be marketed until stocks run out. Banning these products in the EU will help foster a rapid switch to the manufacture of mercury free products from large global exporters such as China, and reduce the use of mercury in this sector.” The vote now needs to be formally approved by the European Parliament, which is expected to vote on the issue during its plenary session in September 2013, then rubber-stamped by Council.
